Book 40 Chapter 3    40:03    Verses 17    Signs ²²

40:03:01   In¹ those¹ days¹ came¹ John¹ the¹ Baptist¹, preaching¹ in² the² wilderness¹ of¹ Judaea¹.

2   And¹ saying¹, Repent¹ ye¹: for¹ the³ kingdom¹ of² heaven¹ is¹ at¹ hand¹.

3   For² this¹ is² he¹ that¹ was¹ spoken¹ of³ by¹ the⁴ prophet¹ Esaias¹, saying², The⁵ voice¹ of⁴ one¹ crying¹ in³ the⁶ wilderness², Prepare¹ ye² the⁷ way¹ of⁵ the⁸ Lord¹, make¹ his¹ paths¹ straight¹.

4   And² the⁹ same¹ John² had¹ his² raiment¹ of⁶ camel’s¹ hair¹, and³ a leathern¹ girdle¹ about¹ his³ loins¹; and⁴ his⁴ meat¹ was² locusts¹ and⁵ wild¹ honey¹.

40:03:05   Then¹ went¹ out¹ to¹ him¹ Jerusalem¹, and⁶ all¹ Judaea², and⁷ all² the¹⁰ region¹ round¹ about² Jordan¹,

6   And⁸ were¹ baptized¹ of⁷ him² in⁴ Jordan², confessing¹ their¹ sins¹.

7   But¹ when¹ he² saw¹ many¹ of⁸ the¹¹ Pharisees¹ and⁹ Sadducees¹ come¹ to² his⁵ baptism¹, he³ said¹ unto¹ them¹, O¹ generation¹ of⁹ vipers¹, who¹ hath¹ warned¹ you¹ to³ flee¹ from¹ the¹² wrath¹ to⁴ come²?

8   Bring¹ forth¹ therefore¹ fruits¹ meet¹ for³ repentance¹:

9   And¹⁰ think¹ not¹ to⁵ say¹ within¹ yourselves¹, We¹ have¹ Abraham¹ to⁶ our¹ father¹: for⁴ I¹ say² unto² you², that² God¹ is³ able¹ of¹⁰ these¹ stones¹ to⁷ raise¹ up¹ children¹ unto³ Abraham².

40:03:10  And¹¹ now¹ also¹ the¹³ axe¹ is⁴ laid¹ unto⁴ the¹⁴ root¹ of¹¹ the¹⁵ trees¹: therefore² every¹ tree¹ which¹ bringeth¹ not² forth² good¹ fruit² is⁵ hewn¹ down¹, and¹² cast¹ into¹ the¹⁶ fire¹.

11  I² indeed¹ baptize¹ you³ with¹ water¹ unto⁵ repentance²: but² he⁴ that³ cometh¹ after¹ me¹ is⁶ mightier¹ than¹ I³, whose¹ shoes¹ I⁴ am¹ not³ worthy¹ to⁸ bear¹: he⁵ shall¹ baptize² you⁴ with² the¹⁷ Holy¹ Ghost¹, and¹³ with³ fire²:

12  Whose² fan¹ is⁷ in⁵ his⁶ hand², and¹⁴ he⁶ will¹ throughly¹ purge¹ his⁷ floor¹, and¹⁵ gather¹ his⁸ wheat¹ into² the¹⁸ garner¹; but³ he⁷ will² burn¹ up² the¹⁹ chaff¹ with⁴ unquenchable¹ fire³.

13  Then² cometh² Jesus¹ from² Galilee¹ to⁹ Jordan³ unto⁶ John³, to¹⁰ be¹ baptized² of¹² him³.

14  But⁴ John⁴ forbad¹ him⁴, saying³, I⁵ have² need¹ to¹¹ be² baptized³ of¹³ thee¹, and¹⁶ comest¹ thou¹ to¹² me²?

40:03:15  And¹⁷ Jesus² answering¹ said² unto⁷ him⁵, Suffer¹ it¹ to¹³ be³ so¹ now²: for⁵ thus¹ it² becometh¹ us¹ to¹⁴ fulfil¹ all³ righteousness¹. Then³ he⁸ suffered¹ him⁶.

16  And¹⁸ Jesus³, when² he⁹ was³ baptized⁴, went² up³ straightway¹ out² of¹⁴ the²⁰ water²: and¹⁹, lo¹, the²¹ heavens¹ were² opened¹ unto⁸ him⁷, and²⁰ he¹⁰ saw² the²² Spirit¹ of¹⁵ God² descending¹ like¹ a dove¹, and²¹ lighting¹ upon¹ him⁸:

17  And²² lo² a voice² from³ heaven², saying⁴, This² is⁸ my¹ beloved¹ Son¹, in⁶ whom¹ I⁶ am² well¹ pleased¹.
